We sat down with Roanne, Saben’s founder + designer to learn more about our latest foray into footwear, the Sunday Sneaker.

Nearly 20 years designing handbags and now sneakers! Where did that come from?

Saben’s focus is very much on creating covetable, functional accessories and what’s more functional than a classic pair of sneakers. They’re one of those pieces that you can wear with anything to any place. They are one of the most well-worn wardrobe essentials of our time.

Have you always loved shoes as much as handbags?

I enjoy all accessories, handbags, shoes, jewellery, glasses, scarves. I’m not sure there’s ever been an accessory I haven’t embraced. It’s the accessories that pull an outfit together and therefore make you feel ready for anything.

What makes the perfect sneaker?

Comfort and style. You need to be able to wear them all day and still not want to take them off. Plus, you need to be able to pair them with loungewear or your livery (I’ve been watching too much Downton Abbey! If you know, you know.)

What makes the Sunday sneaker so special?

Every detail on a Saben piece is deliberate and created with intent, our Sunday sneaker is no different.

Style and functionality are equally important – our Sunday sneaker has a leather upper and leather lining with an extra comfortable supportive leather moulded foot-bed so whether you’re popping to the shops or traversing the city, your sneakers will take you there with comfort, ease and style.

A Saben piece wouldn’t be complete without pale gold hardware which is why we gave our sneakers the same luxe appeal as our bags with pale gold eyelets and aglets with a gold woven pull tab at the back (to help your sneakers slip on like a dream).

First the Stella Slide, now the Sunday Sneaker, what’s next in Saben’s footwear takeover?

We have another special style launching this summer – the Imogen Slide. She’s an extension of our Stella slide only this time in luxe leather. Fuller foot coverage elevates the look, so comfort becomes oh so stylish.

What do you wear with your sneakers? Are you a jeans and tee kinda gal or a shirt and blazer lady?

Literally everything! I wear them to work almost every day, dressed up for day to day office life and on the weekend whether its taking the boys to basketball or meeting friends for dinner. They go everywhere with me.

What does your shoe wardrobe currently look like?

In winter I’m all about sneakers or boots. They’re my winter go to. In summer I swap the boots for slides. Swap, wear, repeat!

Lastly, your Sunday Sneakers are obviously on high rotation in your wardrobe? Which bag are you currently taking everywhere? (And by everywhere, we mean to the supermarket…)

Liv is one of my favourites, she’s just returned with Part III of our Wild Garden collection – this time in Alabaster…the same colour as our sneakers. What can I say? I love a bit of colour co-ordination.
